THEIA is an innovative project that uses advanced Earth observation technologies to enhance the Copernicus security services. In light of the growing challenges posed by climate change and global security issues, THEIA aims to detect population movements. This helps EU authorities make informed decisions and respond in a timely manner.

Focus on Earth observation

At the heart of THEIA is the integration of Earth observation data collected by very high-resolution satellites. This data enables detailed monitoring of the Earth’s surface and provides crucial information for the early analysis of security-related events. By utilizing European satellite constellations, a comprehensive and timely database is created for this purpose.

1. Identifying environmentally driven migration:

Use of space technologies for identification and monitoring during natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies.

2. Monitoring population movements in crisis areas:

Providing comprehensive data and analysis on the dynamics of population movements in and around conflict zones.

Target Groups and Partnerships

THEIA is aimed at EU organizations, EU national agencies, and intelligence services. The project is being carried out in close collaboration with leading technology partners. The consortium includes GEOSYSTEMS HELLAS (GSH), the European Union Satellite Centre (SATCEN), LuxSpace SARL, the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS), the Center of Excellence for Space Sciences and Technologies (SPACE-SI), the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), European Dynamics Luxembourg (ED), Creotech Instruments (CREO), Intelligent Systems (C3I), Web2Climate (WTOC), and MPL Brussels (MPL).
