Baltic GTIF project

Supporting the green transition in the Baltic Sea region by analyzing EO Copernicus data.

Project description:

The Baltic GTIF uses EO technologies to promote climate resilience and sustainability in the Baltic Sea region, where temperatures are rising faster than the global average. Given the region's unique environmental conditions, the project is developing tailored EO solutions in areas such as sustainable urban planning, carbon accounting in agriculture, resilient food systems and adaptive forestry practices. With Lithuania as a pilot country, the project utilizes advanced EO platforms for scalable, cloud-based data processing. Led by OHB Digital Connect, the initiative combines technical expertise and stakeholder engagement to develop practical, data-driven solutions. The Baltic GTIF aims to create a framework for EO-based environmental monitoring, contributing to sustainability efforts across the region.

The role of OHB-DS:

As part of the Baltic GTIF project, OHB DS is using satellite data and machine learning to gain precise insights into urban heat emissions. The aim is to enable decision-makers to identify emerging trends in heat emissions from buildings and quantitatively assess emission reduction strategies such as thermal insulation. As urban areas face increasing legislative pressure - similar to the German Municipal Heat Planning Act - this approach aims to provide a cost-effective and timely alternative to traditional air-based campaigns and support data-driven policy and planning at both national and EU level.
