EO4ER project

Digital Twin Earth Observation for Energy Risks - Predicting the impact of variable power generation by photovoltaic systems, as well as operational risks for large PV systems due to extreme situations.

Project description:

In line with the objectives of the ESA Digital Twin Earth program, the EO4ER ("Earth Observation for Energy Risks") project contributes to the goals of the early Digital Twin Component (DTC) by implementing a DTC prototype for the energy sector.

As solar energy is one of the leading renewable energy sources and at the same time affected by the temperature increase caused by climate change, this project focuses on two use cases related to solar energy systems leading to interactive digital reconstruction and simulation in terms of

  • Predicting the impact of variable power generation from photovoltaic systems on the active operation of low-voltage grids using hourly forecasts of solar power generation based on the novel EO capabilities of the MTG satellite series, and,
  • Operational risks for large PV systems due to extreme situations and the assessment of long-term solar potential based on climate projection datasets and what-if scenarios.

The main stakeholders targeted are individual prosumers as well as infrastructure, grid and distribution network operators. A field test area in Germany (with more than 80 PV systems) will be used to validate the methods developed.

The scope of the EO4ER project is in line with the increased emphasis on renewable energy and zero emissions expected through the European Green Deal as well as national plans for a clean energy transition. The main contractor OHB Digital Services GmbH forms the EO4ER consortium together with Reuniwatt SAS and the Technical University of Ulm (THU).
