SPATRA  project

Space-based applications for traffic monitoring and management to solve problems of the main land transportation modes, road and rail, such as road congestion and the negative impact of extreme temperatures on railroad infrastructure.

Project description:

The project SPATRA aims to improve the use of satellite data in land transportation through the development of two demonstrators for new downstream applications to monitor and manage rail and road traffic. Satellite data will be used together with supported in-situ data to develop two innovative applications for intelligent transport and logistics to solve problems of the main land transportation modes, road and rail: road traffic congestion and negative impacts of extreme temperatures on railroad infrastructure. Through the innovative use of the European Global Navigation Satellite System (EGNSS) and Copernicus satellites, SPATRA aims to address critical challenges in the transport sector, such as congestion, environmental impact and infrastructure monitoring, thus contributing to the objectives of the European Green Deal. The project brings together a consortium of technology leaders, research institutions and industry experts to develop and implement innovative satellite-based solutions. The focus is on two main areas: Improving the efficiency of road traffic, especially at border crossings and parking lots, and increasing the safety and reliability of rail traffic through temperature monitoring and infrastructure integrity assessment. By integrating EGNSS and Copernicus data with ground and drone sensors, SPATRA aims to provide real-time, actionable insights for traffic management and infrastructure maintenance.

Goals and objectives:

The main objectives of SPATRA are to reduce congestion at road borders, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and increase the efficiency and safety of European rail networks by providing early warnings of the adverse effects of extreme temperatures. By harnessing the power of satellite technology, the project aims to create a more sustainable and resilient land, rail and road transportation system. The main objectives include developing applications for optimizing logistics, creating early warning systems for risks in railroad infrastructure and promoting the introduction of space-based technologies for traffic management in the EU.

The role of OHB-DS:

Project Coordinator
Development and implementation of a novel space-based service to predict rail temperature and assess the risk of rail deformation based on a downstream application
