EO4Ports – The Port of the Future

We evaluated the potential of Earth observation for optimizing port operations and developed a new Earth observation product for monitoring bathymetry in the tidal zone in near real time - the EOTideLines application.

EO4Ports – The Port of the Future is an ESA-funded project (4000143660/24/I-DT-EO Best Practice 2023 Industry Sector C) focused on applying state-of-the-art Earth observation and geoinformatics technologies to optimize port operations. As part of the EO4Ports project, OHB developed a new downstream application for monitoring bathymetry in the tidal zone and for assisting maritime operators with navigation in the tidal zone.

EOTideLines is an Earth observation product designed to monitor tidal bathymetry. It visualizes the most recent position of the low-water line, which is derived from optical imagery from the Landsat and Sentinel-2 satellites in combination with a tidal model. This contour line delineates the bathymetry at low tide and can be used to:

  • To provide near-real-time information on bathymetric conditions in the tidal zone.
  • To highlight the presence of transient features such as sandbars, shoals, and navigation channels.
  • To identify potential obstacles that could impede navigation through port entrances and delay operations.
  • To support better planning and execution of dredging operations by tracking past sediment transport rates and the direction of sand movement.
  • Provides insights into historical and current changes in tidal bathymetry, thereby aiding in the effective planning of maritime operations.
