Steel Ladle Tracking Software for ArcelorMittal

Software for tracking, visualizing the status, and managing steel ladles.
The software developed by OHB Digital Services GmbH allows information on the status of the ladles to be retrieved, documented, checked, batches to be assigned and master data to be managed. As part of the planned modernization of the plant, software was needed that could be flexibly adapted to changes in the plant. The new software replaces the outdated and static system and makes handling much easier thanks to its intuitive operation and faster access to all required modules. The software is used at a wide variety of workstations: in ladle control, in the converter control station, in the continuous casting control station and by the crane operators.

Intuitive operation

The new system combines previously separate applications for tracking and managing steel ladles and can be operated intuitively via touchscreen, or alternatively via keyboard and mouse. Especially in the shop floor, and particularly in the crane operator’s cab, touchscreen operation offers significant advantages due to space constraints and the risk of the keyboard and mouse becoming quickly soiled.

The steel ladle tracking dialog provides a quick overview of the ladles' status—such as their location or heating status—through a schematic representation of the ladles in the plant. Detailed information about the ladles can be accessed with a single click or tap. It is just as easy to record weights, document the ladles' locations, or assign ladle lids.

The schematic representation of the steel mill can be dynamically adapted to changes in the plant by configuring the master data.

Additional dialogs are used to verify pans and steel quantities, assign and dispatch batches, and maintain master data. For each user group, the dialogs are configured based on their permissions. The underlying security concept immediately checks the validity of the entries. If a violation of the conditions stored in the system occurs, the current transaction and all entered data are reset, and an error message is displayed. Additionally, the system offers the option to enter all values via emergency data entry.

Technology

The application was developed as a client/server application using .NET and WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation). The data is stored in an Oracle database. Real-time data exchange is enabled through the use of Advanced Queuing.
