PortSense

Ports of the future are those that optimize their operations through the use of various advanced technologies to reduce their environmental and economic impact and improve safety and reliability.

Project description:

The PortSense project was an ESA feasibility study aimed at identifying challenges and solving them with the help of satellite-based technologies—navigation, telecommunications, and Earth observation. Satellites can support various systems used in ports. The “ports of the future” are those that optimize their operations through the use of various modern and advanced technologies to reduce their environmental and economic impact and improve safety and reliability.

Goals and Objectives:

The goal of PortSense was to identify these challenges in the areas of the environment, track and trace, and security, and to propose solutions that are largely supported by space-based technologies. To propose solutions, the team—comprising the companies LuxSpace, OHB Digital Services, and OHB Digital Solutions—conducted a feasibility study addressing the aforementioned areas. The key activities carried out as part of the study were:

  • Study of the technical feasibility and commercial viability of satellite-based services and solutions related to the development of the port ecosystem
  • Identify the technical and commercial risks associated with the introduction of such services and propose remedial measures,
  • Involvement of customers and other relevant users and stakeholders in such services
  • develop a business model for providing the proposed services
  • propose a roadmap that outlines the necessary measures and identifies the stakeholders to be involved in implementation and commercial launch
