Baltic GTIF

Supporting the green transition in the Baltic Sea region through the analysis of Copernicus Earth Observation data.

Project description:

The Baltic GTIF uses Earth Observation (EO) technologies to promote climate resilience and sustainability in the Baltic Sea region, where temperatures are rising faster than the global average. Given the region’s unique environmental conditions, the project is developing tailored EO solutions for areas such as sustainable urban planning, carbon accounting in agriculture, resilient food systems, and adaptive forestry practices.   With Lithuania as the pilot country, the project uses advanced EO platforms for scalable, cloud-based data processing. Led by OHB Digital Connect, the initiative combines technical expertise with stakeholder engagement to develop practical, data-driven solutions.   The Baltic GTIF aims to establish a framework for EO-based environmental monitoring, thereby contributing to sustainability efforts across the region.

The role of OHB-DS:

As part of the Baltic GTIF project, OHB-DS is using satellite data and machine learning to gain precise insights into urban heat emissions. The goal is to enable decision-makers to identify emerging trends in heat emissions from buildings and to quantitatively evaluate emission-reduction strategies, such as thermal insulation. As urban areas face increasing regulatory pressure—similar to Germany’s Municipal Heat Planning Act—this approach is intended to offer a cost-effective and timely alternative to traditional airborne campaigns and to support data-driven policy and planning at both the national and EU levels.
