Urban Green View

Using satellite data for more greenery in the city in the fight against climate change.

ESA feasibility study:
Space for Urban Green

The aim of the project "Urban Green View" is the feasibility study on the technical and commercial viability of innovative Earth Observation (EO)-based services to support the development of sustainable services for the integration of green spaces in a sustainable urban context. The target group to protect urban areas from climate hazards and reduce the burden on urban society are city administrations (e.g. planning offices), horticulture and landscaping, forestry and environmental authorities.

EO-based service, which will be analyzed as part of the project:

  • Monitoring and evaluation of the characteristics of urban green spaces
  • Assessment of the impact of current and potential urban green spaces on cold air production
  • Detection of heat islands

EO-based service, which will be analyzed as part of the project:

  • Satellite data such as Copernicus Sentinels, other non-commercial satellite missions, e.g. Landsat, existing earth observation products, commercial satellite data and the MTG or EnMAP satellite missions.

Urban Green View feasibility study successfully completed

The feasibility study confirmed the technical feasibility and commercial viability of Earth Observation (EO)-based services for the integration of green spaces and the monitoring of heat zones in a sustainable urban context. Based on the confirmed technical feasibility and stakeholder input, three services were identified as technically feasible/commercially viable: Urban Heat Services, Urban Vegetation Services and Urban Dynamics Analysis.
