Urban Green View

Using satellite data to bring more greenery to the city in the fight against climate change.

ESA Feasibility Study:
Space for Urban Green

The goal of the “Urban Green View” project is to conduct a feasibility study on the technical and commercial viability of innovative Earth observation (EO)-based services to support the development of sustainable services for integrating green spaces into a sustainable urban context. The target audience—aimed at protecting urban areas from climate hazards and reducing the burden on urban society—includes city administrations (e.g., planning offices), the horticulture and landscaping sectors, the forestry sector, and environmental agencies.

EO-based services being analyzed as part of the project:

  • Monitoring and Assessment of the Characteristics of Urban Green Spaces
  • Assessment of the Impact of Current and Potential Urban Green Spaces on Cold Air Production
  • Identification of heat islands

EO data analyzed as part of the project:

  • Satellite data such as Copernicus Sentinels, other non-commercial satellite missions (e.g., Landsat), existing Earth observation products, commercial satellite data, and the MTG and EnMAP satellite missions.

Urban Green View Feasibility Study Successfully Completed

The feasibility study confirmed the technical feasibility and commercial viability of Earth Observation (EO)-based services for the integration of green spaces and the monitoring of heat zones in a sustainable urban context. Based on the confirmed technical feasibility and stakeholder input, three services were classified as technically feasible and economically viable: urban heat services, urban vegetation services, and urban dynamics analyses.
