EO4Ports The port of the future

Earth observation for the port of the future. Traditional port operator processes are being examined with a view to improving them using modern approaches and innovations.

Project description:

EO4Ports The Port of the Future is an ESA-funded project (4000143660/24/I-DT- EO Best Practice 2023 Industry Sector C) that explores the use of state-of-the-art EO and geoinformatics technologies to improve port operations, as well as the safety and environmental sustainability of ports and maritime operators. The EO4Ports project aims to modernize port operations with the help of automation and cloud-based platforms, focusing on efficiency, safety, and sustainability. It involves the development of a framework for Earth observation data in ports, with OHB contributing its expertise in EO technologies and product development. The first EO product developed by OHB in this context is EOTideLine (see video below):
  • Publicly available at https://eotideline.ohb-ds.de for the North Sea region.
  • Uses satellite images to describe the current bathymetry at low tide.
  • Shows temporary features such as sandbanks, shallows and channels that can impair the navigability of harbor entrances.
  • Helps to identify obstacles that could delay operation.
  • Enables better planning and execution of excavation work.
  • Provides insight into historical and current changes in tidal bathymetry to help in the effective planning of maritime operations.
